Guru Har Rai Ji

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Sat Nam Readers!

Well, we’ve come to our seventh Guru – Guru Har Rai Ji.  As always, please forgive any mistakes that I make.

Guru Har Rai Ji was born on January 16th, 1630 at Kiratpur Sahib, Rupnagar in Punjab, India.  His father was Baba Gurdita (son of Guru Hargobind Ji) and his mother was Mata Nihal Kaur.  He married Mata Krishen Kaur and had 2 sons.  He was 14 years old when he ascended to the guruship on the death of his grandfather.

Guru Har Rai Ji was a peaceful man but he did not disband the Sikh warriors that had been put together by his grandfather, Guru Hargobind Ji.

Once, when Dara Shikoh sought the help of Guru Har Rai Ji during a war of succession with his brother Aurangzeb, Guruji assisted Dara Shikoh to escape by having Sikh warriors hid ferry boats after Dara Shikoh had used them to escape Aurangzeb’s forces.  No fighting ensued, as Guruji had promised his grandfather to use the Sikh warriors only in defence.

Once while returning from preaching away, Guruji was attacked by 1000 soldiers of Mohamad Yarbeg Khan, whose father had been killed by Guru Hargobind Ji.  100 Sant Soldiers defeated the attacking forces, sending them fleeing from where they came.

Guru Har Rai Ji also founded an ayurvedic hospitaland research centre at Kiratpur Sahib.

Guru Har Rai Ji died at the age of 31 at Kiratpur Sahib on October 6th, 1661, having led the Sikhs through 17 years of relative peace.
