Guru Har Krishan Ji

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Sat Nam Readers!

Today, this post will share what I have learned of our eighth Guru – Guru Har Krishan Ji.  Please forgive any mistakes that I make.

Guru Har Krishan Ji was our youngest Guru on ascension and our youngest Guru on his death, being blessed with the guruship for less than 3 years.

Har Krishan was the son of Guru Har Rai Ji.  He was born on July 7, 1656 at Kiratpur Sahib in the Punjab.  He died on March 30th, 1664 in Delhi, India.

Guru Har Krishan Ji was only 5 years old when he succeeded his father in the guruship.

Guru Har Krishan Ji visited Delhi in India with his party as the guests of Raja Jai Singh.  Each day, large numbers of Sikhs would come to visit the Guru.  However, there was a smallpox epidemic in Delhi at the time.  Guru Har Krishan aided the sick, contracting the disease himself and dying after refusing treatment.  He named his successor by telling the gathered Sikhs that the next Guru would be found in Bakala.

There is not a lot to say about our youngest Guru, we were blessed with his guruship for too short a time.    However, clearly Guruji exemplified the very best of Sikh values when he cared for the sick at his own peril.  Is this not the very definition of selfless service?

As always, to learn more check out the Basics of Sikhi Channel on YouTube to learn more about us, our Gurus and our beliefs.  Also, you can read “A History of the Sikhs” by Khushwant Singh.
